The Ruins of Krzyżtopór Castle – A 4K Drone Journey Through History
Join us on a breathtaking journey through one of the most extraordinary historical landmarks in Poland – Krzyżtopór Castle, located in the small village of Ujazd, in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship of southeastern Poland.
Built between 1627 and 1644 by the wealthy nobleman Krzysztof Ossoliński, this once-magnificent residence was the largest palace in Europe before the construction of Versailles. A marvel of Baroque architecture fused with military engineering, Krzyżtopór was designed as a “palazzo in fortezza” – a fortified palace with symmetrical elegance and powerful defensive structures.
Fascinating Facts & Symbolism
The structure was built with symbolic numerology in mind:
• 365 windows (one for each day of the year),
• 52 rooms (for every week),
• 12 large halls (for the months),
• 4 towers (symbolizing the seasons).
While not all of these features have been conclusively proven, the myth adds to the castle’s mystique and grandeur.
Inside, legend tells of:
• crystal ceilings, through which exotic aquarium fish were visible,
• marble horse stables with mirrored ceilings,
• a dining hall with a retractable ceiling – advanced engineering for its time.
A Palace Short-Lived
Despite its immense cost (estimated to be over 30 million Polish złoty in today’s value) and grandeur, Krzyżtopór was used as a residence for only about 11 years before the owner’s death in 1645.
During the Swedish Deluge (1655–1660), the castle was plundered and partially destroyed, never to regain its former splendor. For centuries, it stood abandoned and fell into ruin.
