Being an HR executive with a law degree is explained in this career video by lawyer, HR executive and EEO officer Kristine Pizzo of New York. After establishing her career in human resources by working for the US Olympic Committee, Kristine went to law school, earned her law degree, and returned to the world of HR jobs as a human resources executive.
I'm Marc Luber, the founder of JD Careers Out There ("JDCOT") and the JD Refugee class. I'm a lawyer who has worked in alternative career paths for lawyers - first in the music industry, and then as a legal recruiter. I've been helping lawyers with their careers since 2003.
In my interview with Kristine, we analyze HR jobs by discussing both the strategic and operational aspects of a human resources career. The overlapping skill sets and legal issues help to make human resources jobs appealing alternative careers for lawyers.
Kristine shares examples of some of the different tasks that must be handled in human resources jobs, which include many labor and employment law issues. Thanks to those issues, much of the human resources job description will feel familiar to labor and employment lawyers.
Between the labor and employment legal issues and the employee relations aspects of the HR job responsibilities, these roles make good law degree jobs for those who enjoy interacting with a lot of people on a regular basis - especially if you're a generalist like Kristine. The HR job description could also be more specific: like just being focused on training programs or recruiting or benefits or EEO.
If you're wondering what to do with a law degree, whether you're thinking of leaving law practice for a second career for lawyers or you're currently in law school, you may want to explore human resources jobs. In the full version of this interview (available to JDCOT website subscribers and my coaching clients), Kristine tells us how to break into HR jobs. She essentially does a full HR job analysis: she describes a typical day as an HR executive, explains what skills and personality types best fit this path, and shares tips for how to succeed.
