When the Covenant Was Forsaken
(1 Maccabees Chapter 1)

Alexander rose from the land of the west,
Son of Philip, his conquest pressed.
Kingdoms fell beneath his hand,
From Greece to the ends of the land.
He ruled in power, then death drew near,
His kingdom was split, year by year.
From his servants came a wicked root,
Antiochus rose, arrogant in pursuit.

Antiochus Epiphanes claimed the throne,
In the hundred thirty-seventh year known.
He spoke smooth words, deceiving many,
Power and pride were his only remedy.
From Yashar’al arose lawless men,
Who said, “Let us join the nations again.”
“We will make a covenant with the heathen way,
For trouble follows when we stay.”

They abandoned the covenant,
Turned from the Torah of Aba Yahawah.
They built a place of shame in Jerusalem,
And walked away from the ancient path.
They sold themselves to do what was evil,
To please the nations, to stand as one—
But the covenant was forsaken,
And the fall had begun.

The king sent decrees through every land,
“One people, one law, one command.”
Jerusalem was changed by force,
The holy ways were divorced.
They built a gymnasium in the holy city,
Covered the sign of the covenant in pity.
They rejected the law they once knew,
And chose the customs of the nations they grew into.

Antiochus entered with arrogant hand,
He plundered the sanctuary of the land.
The golden halaran, the menorah bright,
The table of bread, the vessels of light.
Silver and gold he carried away,
Treasures hidden were stripped that day.
Blood was spilled in the holy place,
And sorrow covered Jerusalem’s face.

Jerusalem mourned in sackcloth and pain,
Her joy was turned into shame.
Her Kahan groaned, her virgins bowed,
The city cried out loud.
The sanctuary was laid desolate,
Feasts turned to grief and gates to hate.
All this came because they strayed,
From the covenant Aba Yahawah made.

Scrolls of the Torah were torn and burned,
Those who kept them were condemned.
Circumcision was forbidden by law,
Death was the price for obedience to Aba Yahawah.
Halaran were raised to foreign gods,
Swine were offered—defilement spread abroad.
Many chose to obey the king’s command,
But some stood firm, though few would stand.

Rather than break the Torah Most High.
They would not eat what defiled the soul,
They gave their lives, but kept control.
Their blood cried out from the ground,

In the days they forgot the word.
The covenant was trampled down,
And wickedness wore the crown.
