Filipino Activists Demand ICC Rejoining amid Duterte's ongoing trial in The Hague

Описание: Dozens of Filipino human rights activists took to the streets near the Presidential Palace in Manila on Monday, March 17, demanding that the Philippine government rejoin the International Criminal Court, or ICC. Their call follows the ongoing trial of former president Rodrigo Duterte in The Hague.
The Philippines was a member of the ICC from 2011 until 2019, when it officially withdrew its membership under Duterte’s leadership. However, the ICC's founding Rome Statute, signed in 1998, holds that even if a country leaves the court, it still retains jurisdiction over crimes committed during its membership period.
Just days earlier, on March 14, Duterte made his first appearance before the ICC via video link. He is facing serious allegations of murder tied to his controversial "war on drugs" campaign, which led to the deaths of thousands of Filipinos during his presidency.
Duterte, who served as president from 2016 to 2022, is set to become the first Asian former head of state to stand trial at the ICC. The court, established more than two decades ago, was designed as a last-resort institution to prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression.
As the legal proceedings unfold, human rights activists continue to push for the Philippines to return to the ICC, hoping it will help ensure justice for the victims of Duterte's brutal drug war.
