Home equity theft is very real. In Michigan and 12 other states, counties foreclose on people's homes for small amounts of tax debt, auction the properties off and keep all the profits. Some counties even rely on these foreclosures for their annual budgets.
In Wayne County, Michigan, the elected county treasurer's family was bidding on properties at auction, and in an ironic twist, neglected to pay their own property taxes:
