Driver mod day. Really struggled with the tires and to a lesser extent, the brakes. I knew the DS2500 brake pads would be questionable when driven at a faster pace but they were OK after the first session of bedding them in; I'm used to driving on hybrid (non-dedicated track pads). The Vitour P1 tires though...those were awful. Fully acknowledging I am still new to the mid-engine platform, both this Cayman and the Lotus Emira were easier to drive on their OEM rubber.
Spent the day comparing notes with others who also have this tire and a few things are coming to light. 1. they seem to like lower hot PSI (30-32 psi seemed to be the happy area on my car) but I feel a bit nervous running them at 20psi cold in order to achieve those max hot temps...also the tires are pretty bad till they reach 30psi...so the window of good temps is just around 1 lap for me, also 2. wider tires over 300mm seem to have better traction and 3. you can really feel the difference in tackiness after a session. Although my tires were hotter, they were not sticky, whereas someone who is much faster than me in a C8 Z06 had lower temps but their tires were all tacky (as I usually feel on a tire after hot laps). A friend with a G80 M3 also shared my experiences and we were driving in the same session.
The only thing I can say is, the tire can be fast but it doesn't give the driver much confidence as its characteristics continuously change - quite a bit - during a session. I will not be buying these again, especially not at the prices currently sold for in the USA that match the same costs as an RE71, CRS, etc.
All in all, good track day full of learning. There were a lot of crashes and stuck cars due to mud but winter track days tend to be somewhat problematic. The track was also pretty dusty and even wet in the morning - which didn't help.
Current setup:
Apex SM-10 19x10 wheels
Vitour P1 tires in 255/35/19 front and 285/35/19 rear sizes
-1.6 / -2.0 degrees of front/rear camber
0 / 0.13 degrees of front/rear toe
Ferodo DS2500 brake pads and old OEM rotors
Castrol SRF Brake Fluid
