In reality, Gypsy was healthy. Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder where a caregiver fakes or causes illness in someone else for attention. She kept Gypsy in a wheelchair, shaved her head, fed her unnecessary medications, and isolated her.

As Gypsy got older, she realized the truth and began secretly talking to people online. In 2012, she met Nicholas Godejohn and started an online relationship with him. In 2015, the two planned Dee Dee’s murder so Gypsy could escape her abuse. Nicholas stabbed Dee Dee to death while Gypsy waited nearby. The couple fled but were caught soon after.

Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Godejohn received life without parole. Gypsy was released on parole in December 2023 after serving 8 years. Her story gained widespread attention through documentaries and TV series, and it sparked national conversations about abuse, mental health, and justice. Now free, Gypsy is focused on rebuilding her life.
