Gates of the Arctic National Park in northern Alaska, entirely above the Arctic Circle, is the northernmost U.S. national park and slightly larger than Belgium. Established as a national monument in 1978 and redesignated in 1980, much of it is protected as the Gates of the Arctic Wilderness, adjoining Noatak Wilderness to form the largest contiguous U.S. wilderness.
Wildlife includes brown and black bears, muskoxen, moose, Dall sheep, wolves, wolverines, foxes, and birds like eagles and owls. Over half a million caribou migrate through the Brooks Range twice yearly, and brown bears number around 132. Dall sheep reach their northernmost range here, and caribou remain an important food source for native peoples.
