On July 31, 2025, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mumbai acquitted all seven individuals accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, which resulted in six fatalities and over a hundred injuries. Among those acquitted are BJP Member of Parliament Pragya Singh Thakur, Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, Major (Retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi.
The court's decision was based on the prosecution's failure to present "cogent and reliable" evidence linking the accused to the blast. Notably, the court found no conclusive proof connecting Pragya Thakur to the motorcycle used in the explosion. Additionally, procedural lapses, such as defective sanction orders under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), were cited as reasons for the acquittal.
Watch journalists Sukanya Shantha and Zeeshan Kaskar discuss the case.
