From wild strawberries to oranges, grapes, figs, all kinds of fruits, nuts, olives and veggies. Portugal's soils produce all manner of fresh, natural foods. We stayed at a friend's place near Pedrogao Grande, and took care of his land and chickens. We help with the growing and harvesting of fresh, organic vegetables and fruits. Most of his electricity is also solar generated.
Over the years expats have moved to Portugal from various parts of Europe (mostly), bought land and decided to live a more self-sufficient, sustainable life. Some have succeeded and decided to stay and make it work, despite the work needed to successfully grow your own food.
With careful planning, you can grow enough food on even a small piece of land. And for the winter months, you can always grow a variety of vegetables and even some fruits inside a poly tunnel!
