Fabulous windsurfing, windfoiling and winging at Rutland Water, 9th June 2023

Описание: Friday 9th June 2023 was predicted to be warm and breezy and due to the closure of Grafham Water for the day saw a number of the Grafham regulars head up to Rutland Water. The wind direction was North Easterly which in theory would create some flat water and clean breeze over the dam wall. Upon arrival and sign in at Whitwell Watersports all looked good, with the sun shining and wind blowing steadily. What was not immediately apparent was the super steep chop a short distance out in to the wind line. One of my windsurfing buddies Ade had promised 'flat water', however there was little of that due to miscalculating the significant distance from the dam wall the wind swept chop had to build up in the NE direction!! The first hour was spent coming to terms with a stronger than forecast gusty wind (upto 25knots) and the now famed Rutland Water chop. Having driven up with just one board this was what I was now duty bound to use - so there were some bouncy moments on my 130 litre Fanatic Falcon Slalom board, and coupled with my Neil Pryde Speedster 7.2 things were a bit hairy early on. However, as the day progressed the wind became a bit less gusty and I managed to settle in to the footstraps and enjoy some fun blasting across the lake on both upwind and downwind points of sail.

Once back off the water I captured on camera some mighty fine wind-foiling, winging and windsurfing by those still out on the water enjoying the late afternoon conditions.

Check out the epic and impressive windfoil wipeout at 0:50 (repeated in slow motion at 11:09) - absolute proof that you can survive during a high speed windfoiling wipeout - holding on to the boom is essential to keeping that foil away from you!
