India’s population has grown dramatically from 361 million in 1951 (the first post-independence census) to approximately 1.45 billion in 2025, making it the world’s most populous country. This massive increase was driven by several key factors: initially, high birth rates of 5–6 children per woman persisted due to cultural norms favoring large families, early marriages, low female literacy, and strong son preference; at the same time, death rates fell sharply from the 1950s onward thanks to improved healthcare, vaccination campaigns, antibiotics, and better control of epidemics like malaria and smallpox. Population momentum—where large cohorts born in earlier decades continued to reproduce—further fueled growth even as fertility rates began declining from the 1990s due to rising education, urbanization, and family planning awareness, especially in southern states. The 1975–77 forced sterilisation campaign during the Emergency created a backlash that delayed voluntary adoption of contraception in many regions. Today, while the national fertility rate has fallen to around 2.0, northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar still have higher rates, sustaining annual growth of about 10–12 million people. #IndiaPopulation #PopulationGrowth #DemographicTransition #IndiaDemography #Overpopulation #FertilityDecline #PopulationMomentum #IndianHistory #1947toNow #SustainableDevelopment
