The snow began to fall just as the last of the streetlights flickered to life.
He waited by the heavy iron gates of the park, the collar of his overcoat turned up against a wind that felt far less cold than the letter he had received that morning. It was a classic scene, really. The kind of cinematic tragedy that only happens to people who have too much time and not enough heart.
He was supposed to arrive by ten. A final meeting to decide if the secret they had shared through the autumn months could survive the harsh light of the winter social season. But as the clock tower struck midnight, the only sound was the rhythmic pulse of the city and the hollow ache of an empty sidewalk.
A silent night, indeed. One man waiting for a ghost, and the other likely already miles away, safely tucked back into a life of duty and expected shadows.
The city is dreaming of miracles. But here, we only deal in the truth.
