Definition:
Power factor is the cosine of the phase angle (ϕ) between voltage and current.
PF = cos ϕ

Formula:
PF = True Power / Apparent Power = cos ϕ

Cases:

Purely resistive → PF = 1 (unity, maximum efficiency)

Purely inductive/capacitive → PF = 0 (no true power)

Mixed circuit → 0 less than PF less than 1


Importance:
High PF = efficient use of power.
Low PF = wastage of energy.
PF is improved using capacitor banks.
