How do you create a culture where your team actually tells you when you're screwing up?
Rob Bowen learned it in the Navy.
They didn't call it "servant leadership" back then—they called it "closed door."
Here's how it worked:
A junior enlisted person walks into his office. "Hey, LT, can we talk?"
"Yes."
Door shuts. Rank comes off.
At that point, they could say whatever they wanted in confidence. And he could help solve their problems.
That's how he leads today:
"I work for my team. We're all equals."
The only time they're allowed to use the word "boss"?
When they need leverage against somebody else.
"I want people to tell me I'm screwing up. That's fine with me. You've got to be polite, but I want people to tell me that."
That's real leadership.
