(15 Sep 2020) Restaurateurs in Tel Aviv smashed plates on Tuesday in protest against a second nationwide lockdown set to be introduced to fight a surge in coronavirus cases .
The country will mark the start of the Jewish New Year on Friday with a second lockdown which will see schools, restaurants, malls and hotels close, among other businesses.
Israelis will also face restrictions on movement and on gatherings.
The virus crisis and its economic impact forced restaurant owners and many small businesses to shut their doors during the first nationwide lockdown imposed in March.
Restaurateur, Tomer Moor, joined protesters on Tuesday smashing plates and chanting "we've had enough" in outrage over the returning restrictions
He said a second closure would be a death sentence for many restaurants.
Israel has seen new cases of COVID-19 skyrocket in recent weeks.
Overall, Israel has recorded more than 160,000 cases of the virus, with more than 40,000 still active, and more than 1,100 deaths.
