Here’s my transcription of the Supremes song “You Keep Me Hangin' On”. This song comes from their 1966/67 album :The Supremes Sing Holland, Dozier, Holland". The bass player on this track was James Jamerson.

I encourage you to try playing this bass line without the music. I had to laugh, it's basically a polka or a two step beat! It makes me wonder if James was being a little "cheeky" and if they had a laugh about it too. It's a two step, but it works so well inside this pop song. Funny 😊

I have to confess that this one was a bit of a chore to notate. This is the third version I made. The first two were written in A flat minor and then in G sharp minor. Neither of those keys are not very pleasant to read in. I kept ending up with chords like F flat and C flat. Ugh. Playing a low E that is written as F flat just goes against everything in my being. I had to find another solution.

I noticed that the verse feels like a key change to my ears. So I modulated between the chorus and the verses and voila, it became much easier to read. Problem solved. 😊

I love how this song drives along and how he stays on top of the beat. He and the drummer really push it forward, but without rushing. The tempo stays very steady from beginning to end. The Motown rhythm section - no wonder they're legends!

There are a few different ways this could be played, but I found that staying in first position avoids a lot of unnecessary movement. I tried playing it with the high A flat on the sixth fret of the D string, but again, it felt like I was moving around much more than I needed to. For me, that's usually a recipe for some boo boos 😉
