Building Milo the Science Rover one last time, children explore how rovers send messages back to base when they locate what they are looking for.

Explaining how satellites transmit radio signals between the base and the rover, we discuss why communication is so important? If a rover successfully completes a series of tasks, but fails to send back the results, the mission will be deemed a failure. A communication link between the remote rover and the base is essential.

Simulating the messaging process the children build a switch using the tilt sensor and program it to send different messages (visual, text or photos) when the switch is tilted one way or another.

The kit we used

For this project we used the LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 Core Set. The WeDo 2.0 projects are developed with the National Curriculum requirements for science at Key Stage 2 in mind.
It is based upon the latest science curriculum and was created to enhance pupils’ curiosity and science and computing skills. Using tablet computers we provide children access to an easy-to-use programming environment that follows the WeDo 2.0 Curriculum Pack covering themes such as life, physical, earth, space sciences as well as engineering.

The WeDo 2.0 projects are developed with the National Curriculum requirements for science at Key Stage 2 in mind.
These practices represent the expectations of the Curriculum, in that pupils develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding, as well as practical skills.
