Cleveland police say no one was hurt and crews are cleaning up after a large sinkhole opened up Sunday morning on a busy stretch of road downtown along the edge of the Warehouse District.
3News crews observed police and city workers on the scene at West St. Clair Avenue and West 3rd Street, with caution tape and traffic barrels placed around the large hole in the middle of the intersection.
“This looks like out of a movie, like crazy," said Justin Dalum, who attends school in Cleveland.
Police were called to the scene just after 8:30 a.m., officials told 3News. A car had gone into the sinkhole and was partially stuck for a short time before being removed with the help of a tow truck. The owner was able to drive away in the vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The intersection has been blocked off and drivers are asked to find alternative routes as needed.
“I had to take a little bit of a detour to kind of get to my place," said Matt Fiorello, who lives in the area.
But for people who live nearby, the disruption didn't end there. Multiple residents told 3News they were without water for most of the day.
“I got a text from my the guy I rent my apartment from, and he texted me, basically saying, the water's gonna be out. I got it around 9 o'clock this morning, checked the faucets, and it's no water," said Fiorello. “I got work tomorrow, I want to be able to take a shower, so we'll see. I don't know how long it's gonna take.”
It's still unclear what caused the sinkhole.
Cleveland officials said right now, there is estimated timeline for when the intersection will reopen.
