UP cabinet minister and SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar has revived the long-running debate by claiming that Uttar Pradesh could be split after the caste census. He also claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed the possibility with him, although the BJP-led government has not officially announced any such plan.

The debate includes proposals for regions such as Purvanchal, Bundelkhand and western and central Uttar Pradesh.

This is not the first time Uttar Pradesh has faced such a proposal. In 2011, the Mayawati government passed an Assembly resolution seeking four states—Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Paschim Pradesh—but the Centre returned it seeking clarifications.

Under Article 3 of the Constitution, Parliament has the power to create new states and alter existing state boundaries.
