For our new track, we blended our traditional Indian instruments (Sitar, Esraj, Bansuri, and Tabla) with the beautiful Japanese spring tradition of "Hinamatsuri" (Doll's Festival), which takes place on March 3rd!
I also drew a lot of inspiration from the deeply mystical worldview of the anime Mushishi. I wanted to weave in that ambient, magical atmosphere—like glowing bugs silently drifting deep within a quiet forest.
Have you guys ever heard of "Hinamatsuri"? On March 3rd, families in Japan display beautifully crafted traditional dolls for a gorgeously elegant spring festival. 🌸
But what fascinated me the most when I was researching for this track is its history! About 1,000 years ago, it actually started as a quiet, spiritual purification ritual called "Nagashibina," where people transferred their misfortunes onto simple paper dolls and floated them away down rivers.
The first half of this song channels that ancient "Nagashibina" ritual and the serene, Mushishi-like mysticism through the breathy tones of the Esraj and Bansuri. Then, in the second half the Sitar and Tabla drop in, bursting into a vibrant, modern spring celebration with a touch of Bollywood energy! 🌸
From ancient prayers on the water to a blooming spring festival. I hope you enjoy this timeless fusion of India and Japan!
