Major $125 million Texas interstate overhaul to break ground in 2026

Описание: A $125 million Texas Department of Transportation project will significantly expand a stretch of Interstate 20 in Abilene, bringing years of construction and major roadway changes to West Central Texas.

TxDOT plans to expand Interstate 20 in Taylor County from FM 600 to SH 351 as part of a large-scale infrastructure investment aimed at addressing increased traffic demands. The project is expected to cost approximately $125 million and will widen the highway to six lanes while adding an overpass at Judge Ely Boulevard.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2026 and continue through late 2029. According to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration, the project spans more than 131,000 square feet and includes the reconstruction of frontage roads, storm drain facilities, retaining walls, and traffic signals. San Antonio-based Pape-Dawson Engineers Inc. is listed as the design firm.

In addition to the main expansion, TxDOT plans to reconfigure the interchange at U.S. 277 and U.S. 83. The agency says the improvements are intended to better accommodate increased traffic along IH-20, improve pedestrian and cyclist accommodations, enhance emergency response times, and support economic development in the region.

The Abilene expansion is one of several major transportation projects underway across Texas. Elsewhere in the state, TxDOT recently began work on a $2.7 million safety project along U.S. Highway 62/82 in Lubbock and Hockley counties, highlighting a broader push to upgrade aging road infrastructure.
