“Dark of the Sun” (1968), AKA “The Mercenaries,” is hands-down the best movie ever made about soldiers-of-fortune in Africa, meaning no disrespect to either “The Wild Geese” or “The Dogs of War.” This title sequence is one of the most exciting: great visuals and a wonderful music score by Jacques Loussier, which sounds a little reminiscent of the 1960s work being done by Ennio Morricone and Maurice Jarre.
Based on the Wilbur Smith novel, the movie remains shockingly tough and brutal, even today. Rod Taylor (R.I.P.) gives what might be his best performance. The rest of the cast do terrific, impassioned work. Jim Brown is especially strong and solid, whose character provides nuanced moral balance to the film as a man fighting in Africa, not for money, but for his people to be free.
The film was directed by Jack Cardiff, a great color cameraman who had an interesting run in the 1960s as a director. Cardiff returned to camera work and, ironically but splendidly, would be the cinematographer on “The Dogs of War.”
