Israeli Defence Forces says it may have to cancel plans to buy more Iron Dome missile defence systems due to budget cuts. The Iron Dome stations track incoming missiles and rockets and launch their own missiles to intercept and destroy the incoming projectiles. Iron Dome stations were first installed last year in the south, and their success rate is roughly 75% -- high enough to be an effective defence against rocket attacks from Gaza.
Israel has so far bought four Iron Dome stations and had planned to buy two more. But with proposed budget cuts for defence spending, the further two orders may be canceled. JN1 asked Israelis in Jerusalem what they think about the budget cuts and their national defence. Jerusalem residents (who are not directly threatened by Gazan rockets) were generally supportive of more Iron Dome stations, but others said they were confident their government would make the right choice.
Recent rocket attacks wounded an Israeli woman on February 11th, and Israel responded the next day with the Israeli Air Force striking targets in Gaza. The air strike reportedly hit tunnels and weapons manufacturing facilities. Several Palestinians were injured according to Gazan medical officials.
