Supreme Court Calls Out Systemic Gender Bias Against Women Officers In Armed Forces

Описание: The Supreme Court has delivered a major verdict for women officers in the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, calling out systemic gender bias in their career progression. The court observed that the evaluation process for Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) was loaded against women officers, negatively impacting their promotions compared to male counterparts. The apex court has directed that all eligible women officers will now be deemed to have completed 20 years of service and will receive consequential pensions and benefits. The court further struck down the arbitrary ceiling of 250 women officers per year for permanent commission in the Army, stating that all eligible women must receive permanent commission without numerical restrictions. The judgment builds on previous Supreme Court and Delhi High Court orders from 2009 and 2019 that recognised the eligibility of women short service commission officers for permanent commission. The court noted that despite earlier orders, a large number of women officers were kept out due to evaluation criteria that did not assess them at the same level as male officers.
