What happens when a space that looks like community is actually designed to produce conflict?
In this video, I introduce the concept of anti-community — a condition where platforms that appear to bring people together instead profit from division, spectacle, and internal antagonism. Using the return of BKChat LDN as a case study, this essay explores how digital media economies transform real tensions within Black Britain into viral content.
Part 1 examines the cultural conditions that make this possible:
• the relative youth of a unified Black British identity
• the absence of shared rites of passage that mark adulthood and responsibility
• the lingering influence of class hierarchies and schooling as social markers
• the cultural hunger for visibility in a society that long ignored Black Britain
When those pressures collide with platforms that reward outrage and notoriety, something new emerges: spaces that look like community, but operate against it.
This video is the first half of the essay “A Kitchen of Dysfunction.”
Part 2 explores the role of algorithms, platform economies, and the monetisation of internal conflict.
