Rental scam warning for Canadians: a fake landlord posts a listing that looks legitimate, sends a rental agreement and land title details, takes a deposit, and the renter only finds out at the door when the real homeowner says that person was never allowed to rent the home. Nanaimo RCMP are warning about this after one resident lost nearly $4,000, as reported by My Coast Now on November 4, 2026.
In this video we walk through the five moves police describe: the listing, the paperwork, the deposit, the viewing and the pattern. We use one illustrative character, not a real person and not a real case, to show how a real home, a real owner and real-looking documents can all be used in a fake listing. Everything from the news report is labelled as such, and our own analysis is always labelled too.
You will also see the official 2025 numbers from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (more than 112,000 fraud reports and more than 704 million dollars in reported losses), five red flags, and what police advise: do not send a deposit before viewing a property in person, check whether the same property is listed more than once, and be careful with any landlord who says they are out of town or cannot meet you.
If you think you have been targeted, contact your bank right away and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca) and to your local police. If you are in danger, call 9-1-1. Please do not post names or tips about specific people in the comments. We do not name any victim and we do not show any real person's face.
