Title: A Peek into Ancient Polity and Economy through Coins
The lecture will discuss some important features of the ancient Indian coinage and will also delve into the relationship between ancient economy and polity with special reference to the silver coinage of the Western Kshatrapas as revealed by the study of their coins.
Brief Biodata
Abhijit Dandekar conducted his doctoral research in Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute, Pune, titled ‘Early Historic Ceramics of Mewar with Special Reference to Balathal, District Udaipur, Rajasthan’. He joined the Department of Archaeology, Deccan College in 2003 as the Research Associate in Epigraphy, Palaeography and Numismatics in 2003. He has been teaching the subjects of Epigraphy and Numismatics for last 17 years and has delivered numerous lectures on these subjects at many universities and institutes across India. Besides being an epigraphist and a numismatist, Abhijit Dandekar also specialises in historical ceramics and has analysed archaeological ceramics from the sites such as Balathal, Sanjan, Junnar, Chaul, Chinchani and Mandad.
At present he is working as the Associate professor of Epigraphy, Palaeography and Numismatics at the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Deccan College.
