Bollywood’s iconic film, Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by G.P. Sippy, celebrates its golden jubilee on August 15 this year — marking 50 years since its 1975 release.
While Sholay left the big screen decades ago, its spirit still lives on at Ramadevara Betta in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district, the historic location where much of the movie was filmed.
The hills here still seem to echo with Gabbar Singh’s menacing laughter, Basanti’s lively chatter, and the unforgettable camaraderie of Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra.
This rugged terrain doubled as the fictional village of “Ramgarh.” Filming began in October 1973 and spanned nearly two-and-a-half years. An entire township was built for the shoot, with the crew even constructing a road from the Bangalore–Mysore highway to the sets. Many locals still recall the filming days vividly.
Even today, Ramanagara railway station stands as a reminder of the film’s legacy. The movie opened with a scene shot here, and now its entrance walls are adorned with Sholay-themed murals, welcoming visitors with nostalgia before they head toward the famous hills.
