In this February day on the homestead, I’m tackling the real jobs.... cleaning out the chicken house, hauling manure down to the vegetable garden, and scrubbing icy water buckets with numb fingers. It’s wet, it’s messy, and everything takes twice as long… but this is the quiet, honest work that keeps a smallholding going.

Sometimes it’s less “cottagey” and more “mud up to your ankles”.....and that’s okay.
