In this episode of AIR: Living Creatively in the Middle, Jason Alberty asks Gerard Estella whether it’s more important for a creative to find a niche or to stay a generalist. Gerard shares that while both paths have value, the journey often starts broad, learning the craft, experimenting, and discovering what resonates, before naturally narrowing into a niche that defines your artistry and career. Drawing from his own path from pianist to sound designer, producer, and composer, Gerard explores how curiosity, preparation, and persistence transform general skills into specialized mastery. It’s a reflection on how “being prepared for luck” and continually learning can open doors you never expected.
This series hosts candid discussions between two professionals in the creative industry about making a living while serving their passion in the middle of the country. Gerard Estella moved from New York City to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In doing so, he has been able to create a vibrant and varied creative life, founding and running a marketing company, producing music for a variety of global bands as well as freelancing for Sony, composing movie scores, writing musicals, and performing nearly every week, all at the same time. Interviewed by Jason Alberty, local writer/teacher/performer, they discuss the difficulties and joys of making a vibrant and successful creative life without living on the coasts.

Finished in 1886, the 15,000 sq. ft. home at the center of the estate is surrounded by 33 acres of woodland, gardens, lawns, a pond, and servant quarters, which are now used for landscaping/garden and administration offices, and studio space. The site also has a natural amphitheater and several spaces for live events.
The Artisan Studio’s dual mission inspires community interaction with history, preservation, and the arts and serves the underserved artist community.
