We discuss the differences between pathological demand avoidance (PDA) and demand avoidance in autism. For autistic individuals, demand avoidance may be caused by negative sensory experiences or social communication challenges, leading them to rationally avoid certain situations. In contrast, PDA is driven by a need for autonomy and a perception of being below the person making the demands, which activates the nervous system and causes avoidance. This distinction is important, as homeschooling may not resolve the issue for PDA individuals if the structured learning environment still feels like a loss of autonomy.
