"I don't think that neither Hamas nor Fatah will be able to form a government on their own, it's clearly a polarised situation, two major blocs, but they are going to need to enter into some coalitions with the smaller blocs that are entering. (If) Hamas manages to enter into that coalition to form a government, then of course it will mean a total transformation of Palestinian society and of Palestinian politics with serious ramifications for the whole region."

"A strong Hamas showing is an expression not just of dissatisfaction with Fatah but an expression of the terrible conditions of injustice and violence and extremism under which the Palestinians have been living due to the Israeli occupation. It is the Israeli occupation that has really distorted Palestinian realities, and their practices and measures have strengthened Hamas in really unrealistic proportions, because the Palestinian people are not basically ideological. They are either reacting to Fatah's ineptitude or corruption - it's a protest vote and an angry vote in many cases - or they're reacting to the violence and extremism of the occupation by adopting its methods as well."

"I don't think Hamas will disarm very easily or voluntarily, I think Hamas sees itself as having two wings - political and military - and might rely on both. However, I think once they accepted to enter the political arena, democratically enter elections, they do not have the option of claiming the mandate of the gun; they have the option of claiming the mandate of the vote."

"Well it seems to me that those who are going to enter the coalition will have to enter on the basis of shared ideas and goals. I do not see myself entering into a coalition with divergent views or with people whose ideologies I do not share. I belong to those who believe in a multi-party, pluralistic, democracy based on enlightenment, rule of law, openness, and not based on religion or creating a theocratic system."

STORYLINE:
Palestinian legislator Hanan Ashrawi, one of the negotiators at the first peace talks between the PLO and Israel 15 years ago, spoke to AP Television News on Wednesday on the possibility of an election outcome bringing Hamas into a governing coalition.
Mrs Ashrawi, who held ministerial posts in previous Palestinian governments, said the poll was polarised and does not foresee either Hamas or Fatah garnering enough votes to govern without other coalition partners.
She links Hamas' popularity among Palestinian voters directly to the Israeli occupation.
