An 18-year-old bride was allegedly shot by her neighbour during her wedding ceremony in Bihar’s Buxar district, police said on February 25.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night under the Chausa police station limits when Aarti Kumari was standing on the stage with her groom. According to Chausa Additional Station House Officer Chandan Kumar, the accused allegedly fired at the bride, hitting her in the stomach. Police said the attack prima facie appears to be linked to a personal relationship.
Family members and locals immediately rushed the injured bride to Sadar Hospital in Buxar. Due to her critical condition, doctors later referred her to a hospital in Varanasi for advanced treatment.
In her statement to police, Aarti identified the accused as her neighbour, Deenbandhu. Her family alleged that he was in a one-sided relationship with her and had previously objected to her marriage.
Police said the accused fled the scene after the shooting, and raids are currently underway to apprehend him. The groom’s family had reportedly arrived from Sulemanpur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district for the ceremony. Further investigation is ongoing.
