Jain Literature:
Agamas: These are the canonical scriptures of Jainism, consisting of teachings attributed to Lord Mahavir and earlier Tirthankaras. They are divided into several categories, including Angas, Upangas, Chedasutras, Mulasutras, and Prakirnakas.
Non-Canonical Literature: Apart from the Agamas, Jainism has a rich tradition of non-canonical literature, including commentaries (bhashyas), expositions (niryuktis), and philosophical works (tattvas).
Jain Councils:
First Council (3rd century BCE): Organized by Sthulabhadra under Chandragupta Maurya, it compiled and standardized Jain scriptures.
Second Council (5th century CE): Convened by Devardhi Kshamasramana, it addressed disputes and reaffirmed Jain doctrines.
Sects of Jainism:
Digambara: Followers believe in complete nudity as a symbol of non-attachment and practice asceticism rigorously.
Svetambara: Followers wear white clothes and allow some possessions for monks, emphasizing a more liberal approach to asceticism.
Royal Patronage:
Various Jain rulers, such as Chandragupta Maurya, supported Jainism, leading to its growth and influence.
King Kharavela of Kalinga and King Samprati of the Maurya dynasty were notable Jain patrons.
Doctrines of Jainism:
Ahimsa: Central principle advocating non-violence towards all living beings.
Anekantavada: Doctrine of multiple perspectives, recognizing the complexity of truth.
Aparigraha: Principle of non-attachment and minimalism in possessions.
Karma Theory: Belief in karma as a force that influences one's life and rebirths based on actions.
Jain Architecture:
Temples: Elaborately designed temples with intricate carvings, often depicting Jain cosmology and teachings.
Derasars/Basadis: Jain places of worship, characterized by ornate pillars, domes, and sculptures.
Gopurams: Towering gateways leading to Jain temples, showcasing detailed craftsmanship and religious motifs.
Jainism's rich literary heritage, diverse sects, philosophical depth, royal support throughout history, and architectural marvels collectively contribute to its enduring significance and influence in Indian culture and spirituality.
