The Arakan Army (AA) launched an offensive in early October 2024 against Ann Township, where the Western Command of the Myanmar Military is based. By December 20, the AA had successfully captured and taken full control of the entire military command headquarters.

During the operation, the AA also captured hundreds of prisoners of war, including the deputy regional commander.

After the Western Command headquarters was seized, the AA detained hundreds of military personnel in batches, including the acting commander of the headquarters and chief of staff Kyaw Kyaw Than, as well as the deputy regional commander Thaung Tun.
