In this week’s Bas Paanch Minute, Dr Ayesha continues our short series on Staying Mentally & Emotionally Healthy by exploring simple changes we can make in our surroundings to invite more peace and joy into daily life.
She acknowledges that sometimes life feels overwhelming, the world seems heavy, and our hearts feel numb (anhedonia). At these times it may be a good idea to think about external things in our life which will likely improve if we feel better e.g. work performance or relationships. That may give us the motivation we need to make a change.
Practical changes we can make to our surroundings:
1️⃣ Declutter physical space: your room, desk, or lounge because less visual chaos helps the brain feel less overwhelmed
2️⃣ Cut down distractions: when you want to enjoy something (a book, a film, music) put the phone away for an hour
3️⃣ Schedule joyful activities: block time for small pleasures (a walk, a cup of tea, a chapter of a book) so you have something to look forward to
4️⃣ Prioritize rest: unplug from work, allow deliberate downtime, and protect good sleep
These shifts in our environment and routine can bring a little more joy into our lives by improving mood, focus, and relationships one small change at a time.
