"Modernist theories posit that history is a series of progressions from lower to higher forms. It’s not hard to see how from here one could invent a progression of universal human development from Hunter-Gatherer to Agricultural to Industrial. This means indigenous peoples practicing non-industrial ways of life are defined as “less advanced” and not just culturally different.
This is part of where colonizers get their paternalism. The sense that these societies that we come into contact with are just “baby societies” that need to “grow up”.
But for the large part their communities are much older than our own, even if that is a symptom of colonizers’ rootlessness and thus something our rulers did to our society to make it more useful to the spread of capital and markets."
