Youth Full Review Transcript:

Italian director Paolo Sorrentino made the absolutely breathtaking movie the great beauty this movie Youth is his follow-up but it's in the English language that can sometimes be a problem for a director and a writer in this case as well working in a language that isn't their native tongue his great asset here in this movie is a wonderful performance from Michael Caine as a retired British composer who's spending his summer at a spa hotel in the Swiss Alps with his daughter played by Rachel Weisz and an American movie director his best friend played by Harvey Keitel now it has things in the plus column and in the negative column and in the negative side of things Harvey Keitel's storyline about making his last movie I wasn't as interested in although it does have great support from Paul Dano and a terrific cameo from Jane Fonda I was more interested in Michael Caine's story and also in the directorial flourishes that you get from Sorrentino moments of great oddness you get a Maradona lookalike playing keepy-uppy with a tennis ball a cameo from Paloma Faith playing herself moments of oddness weirdness and humor but at its heart you get this wonderful still performance of beauty and sadness from Michael Caine.
