First successful ignition test of the Applied Ion Systems advanced open-source pulsed plasma thruster, the AIS-gPPT2-1C single channel gridded PPT for PocketQube-class satellites, performed on 05/26/2019.
The AIS-gPPT2-1C features an unconventional flat stacked-plate geometry, aiming to radically reduce the space required for a pulsed plasma thruster. The thruster is made with low cost and easy to find materials such as oxygen-free copper plate, Teflon sheet, 316 stainless steel hardware, and PEEK hardware.
The thruster was tested at a vacuum level of 1x10^-5 Torr. Main capacitor bank consists of a 1uF polypropylene film cap, charged from 650V to up to 1500V. Thruster rep rate is 1Hz, using Teflon Fuel. High voltage and trigger pulse is fed externally via rectified HV transformer and thyratron trigger pulser.
