In this practicum lesson, I use an Orton-Gillingham red word routine to explicitly teach the irregular word “would.” This structured literacy lesson follows the OG approach with direct, explicit instruction and multisensory practice to help students orthographically map this heart word.
During the lesson, students identify the regular and irregular parts of the word, tap and segment the sounds, skywrite, trace, and write the word while saying each letter aloud. We focus on the tricky vowel team “ou” that says /oo/ in would and discuss why this word must be learned “by heart.” Through repetition, movement, and guided practice, students build automaticity, accuracy, and confidence with high-frequency words.
This video highlights my implementation of Orton-Gillingham strategies, multisensory engagement, and explicit modeling as part of my practicum experience in structured literacy instruction.
