Plasma in extreme environments for national security
This talk will review physical problems related to plasma formation in various extreme environments that are important in terms of national security. We will consider extreme environments in gaseous phases with significant concentrations of specific kinetic, chemical, radiation, or potential energy and corresponding energy transfer processes that often occur in non-equilibrium conditions. We will concentrate on several problems with a common denominator related to the never-ending pursuit of a sustained hypersonic flight. This will include thermochemical transformations in air shock flows during Earth reentry of a space capsule and communication plasma blackout, cooling of leading surfaces of high-speed vehicles by means of thermionic emission, and modification of high-speed flow structure by means of plasma. Historical perspective, accomplishments of theory, legacy computational models as well as outstanding challenges will be discussed.
