TITLE: Communicating in Emotionally-Charged Discussions

DESCRIPTION: In this session, we will discuss skills for communicating and being understood in emotionally-charged discussions. We will begin by discussing the double empathy problem that occurs when communicating across neurotypes and the importance of non-autistic people learning how to communicate better with autistic people. Then we will discuss restorative conversation techniques that everyone can use to better understand each other’s viewpoints.

BRIEF BIO: Genna Ashymov is an Autistic ADHDer who is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work through the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She is a facilitator for Community Conversations within the School of Social Work, where she uses restorative techniques to facilitate conversations. She has facilitated a number of conversations, including ‘Disability Pride,’ ‘Neurodiversity with the School/Workplace,’ and ‘Supporting People in Our Lives Experiencing Domestic Violence.’ Learn more   / genevieve-ashymov-99217214  

ABOUT Cultural Autism Studies at Yale (CASY): An 'ethnography' is an exploration of how a group of people express themselves in a cultural way. Autistic people have a growing kind of culture, and each autistic experience is a vital part of it. Dr. Dawn Prince-Hughes is an anthropologist, ethnographer, primatologist, and author who is autistic.
