The scale of nuclear weapons by country from 1945 to 2025 !
In this video, we explore the evolution of nuclear warhead stockpiles from their devastating use in World War II to the present day (1945 - 2025)
From their origins during World War II to the arms reduction treaties of the 21st century, nuclear warheads have played a critical role in global geopolitics. As of 2025, countries continue to modernize and maintain these weapons, with discussions around disarmament ongoing.
Countries with nuclear weapons have played a significant role in global geopolitics. The following is a look at the nations that have developed nuclear arsenals, including the key dates when their official recognition and first nuclear tests took place:
The United States officially recognized its nuclear weapons program in 1945, with the first successful test occurring on July 16, 1945, during the "Trinity Test."
The Soviet Union (now Russia) officially entered the nuclear weapons club in 1949, with its first test taking place on August 29, 1949.
The United Kingdom followed suit in 1952, conducting its first nuclear test on October 3, 1952.
France officially joined the group of nuclear-armed nations in 1960, with its first test on February 13, 1960.
China officially developed nuclear weapons in 1964, marking the milestone with its first test on October 16, 1964.
India officially entered the nuclear weapons category in 1974, conducting its first test on May 18, 1974, which was dubbed "Smiling Buddha."
Pakistan followed in 1998, officially recognizing its nuclear status and conducting its first test on May 28, 1998.
North Korea officially acknowledged its nuclear weapons program in 2006, with its first test taking place on October 9, 2006.
Israel, although not officially acknowledging its nuclear arsenal, is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons. It is estimated to have conducted an unofficial test in 1979.
South Africa developed nuclear weapons in the 1970s and 1980s but voluntarily dismantled its program in the early 1990s, becoming the first country to give up its nuclear arsenal.
