The Paver Mistake Too Many Homeowners Make

Most people assume that concrete is always the stronger, smarter choice, but that’s not the case when it comes to pavers. I’ve seen too many installations fail because someone poured a solid concrete base, thinking it would make the system more durable. The truth is, interlocking pavers are engineered to flex, shift, and move slightly, just like asphalt does. That flexibility is what makes them last.
Using ready-mix concrete creates a rigid base that can’t adapt to minor ground movement, temperature changes, or water flow. Over time, that inflexibility leads to cracking, heaving, or joint failure. It’s a classic case of good intentions with bad results.
There’s still a lot of confusion around whether to use dry or wet cement under pavers, and I get why, it sounds like a more permanent fix. But in this case, “permanent” can mean “problematic.”
This is one of those construction details that seems minor but makes a huge difference in long-term performance. It's something I think more homeowners and contractors need to understand before they pour.
