ISRAEL: PALESTINIAN STUDENTS PROTEST

Palestinian students have been protesting in Jerusalem, demanding the release of eleven Arab students detained in Haifa last week.
There has been tension since clashes on Land Day, the worst of which were in Sakhnin, where Palestinians say an old woman died from being sprayed with tear gas by Israeli soldiers.
"Land Day" marks a 1976 protest against the confiscation of thousands of acres (hectares) of Arab-owned land during which Israeli troops killed six Arab citizens.
Dozens of students were at Tuesday's protest which resulted in one student being injured and another arrested.
Palestinian students held an angry demonstration outside the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus on Tuesday.
The flag-waving protestors are indignant at the arrests of several Arab students during protests at Haifa university a few days ago.
They shouted demands for the release of those students.
Arab-Israeli tension has been on the increase following the death of an old Palestinian woman a few days ago.
Palestinians say she died because of tear gas fired at protestors in the northern Arab-Israeli town of Sakhnin during Land Day (on March 30th) protests there.
At Tuesday's protest, one student was arrested and another one was injured.
The Hebrew University, on Mount Scopus, is celebrating its 75 year anniversary this year.
Both Jewish and Arab students attend the university, as well as other nationalities.
But Arab students say they don't feel they have the same freedom as Jewish students.

"There is no coexistence in our country here and they have betrayed us all in our country. Just we are students and we have the freedom here just like all the students who are Jewish, Arab and from Russia and from everywhere."

In an example of the kind of opinion which inflames tensions here, one Jewish student said he thought, in the ideal Jewish state, Jewish people should have superior rights to other nationalities.

"I think in Israel there must be a Jewish state - a Jewish State is where the Jews are
a majority and they have national rights and the others have only human and civil rights - and they the Arabs want to become the majority and to expel Jews from their state."

Israeli police on horseback eventually broke up the demonstration.
But while the police and the ambulance left the scene, the tension behind the protest is still very much present.
