This video shows how to remove second skin medical adhesive from a healed tattoo. Our preferred brand is Saniderm.
How to Use Second Skin Medical Adhesive for Tattoo Healing
Second Skin is a transparent, breathable, medical-grade adhesive bandage that helps protect new tattoos while promoting faster healing. Here's how to properly apply, wear, and remove it.
Step 1: First Application (By Your Artist)
Many tattoo artists will apply the first layer of Saniderm right after finishing your tattoo. This bandage acts as a protective barrier, preventing bacteria and dirt from getting in.
Step 2: Wearing the First Saniderm Bandage
Keep it on for 8–24 hours (your artist will recommend a specific time).
It’s normal to see fluid build-up (ink, plasma, and lymph) under the bandage.
If the fluid starts leaking out or the bandage is peeling, remove it and apply a new one.
Step 3: Removing the First Bandage
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Slowly and gently peel off the Saniderm. Do not rip it off—it may damage the healing tattoo. If it sticks, take a warm shower and let water run over the bandage to loosen it. Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap (such as Dial or Dr. Bronner's).
Pat dry with a clean paper towel—do not rub.
Step 4: Applying a New Saniderm Bandage
If needed, apply a second Saniderm bandage after cleaning and drying the tattoo. Cut the Saniderm to fit, ensuring at least an inch of extra coverage around the tattoo.
Peel off the backing and place the sticky side onto your tattoo.
Smooth it out to remove air bubbles.
Step 5: Wearing the Second Bandage
You can keep this bandage on for 5–7 days if there are no leaks or irritation.
Avoid excessive sweating, swimming, or prolonged exposure to water.
If irritation or rash occurs, remove it immediately.
Step 6: Removing the Final Saniderm Bandage
After 5–7 days, gently remove the Saniderm using warm water if necessary.
Wash your tattoo with mild soap and pat dry.
Begin applying fragrance-free lotion (like Lubriderm or Aveeno) 2–3 times a day until fully healed.
By using Saniderm, your tattoo should heal faster, with less scabbing and itching, while preserving the ink vibrancy.
