Moonta Mines Tourist Railway. Departing from the platform adjacent to the Moonta Mines Museum, the Moonta Mines Tourist Railway is a guided tour of the historic Moonta Mines State Heritage Area. Featuring extensive commentary from local drivers, passengers are taken past many historic landmarks of the former mining operations, including the reservoir, ore sorting floors, and through a tunnel in Ryans Tailings Heap. It visits the former Precipitation Works, which was set up in 1900 to recover additional copper from the tailings heaps, a process which continued until 1943.
Richmans Enginehouse. Richmans concentrating plant was one of three at the Moonta Mine. It operated from 1869 until the mine closed in 1923, crushing and concentrating ore from nearby shafts. It housed a 32-inch Cornish beam engine. The engine was taken out of service in 1917.There is a walk that can be completed around the area. The skimping burrow (tailing heap) nearby is 20 meters high and from the top a spectacular view of the whole district can be obtained.
Hughes Enginehouse played a focal role in the operations of the Moonta Mine. Its function was to dewater the underground workings on the mine’s largest orebodies. These orebodies, known as Elders and Elders West Lodes, were worked over a length of 1000 metres and to depths of more than 700 metres. This classic Cornish enginehouse was constructed between late 1863 and early 1865. The building housed a 60-inch Cornish beam pumping engine. The engine operated pumps in Hughes and Taylors Shafts which allowed mining of the main orebody below natural water level. It pumped water from the Hughes shaft to a depth of 366 meters, and from Taylors shaft, about 300 meters to the north, to a depth of 768 meters. It worked continuously, except for maintenance, for more than 58 years until closure of the mine in 1923.
