The term "Ashtanga" means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, which refers to the eight branches of yoga as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. These eight branches are: yamas (ethical standards), niyamas (self-discipline), asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sense withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation), and finally, samadhi (transcendence).
The practice of Ashtanga Yoga focuses on the third branch of yoga: asanas. The practice is divided into series, each with a specific set of postures that are performed in a particular order. The series are typically practiced sequentially, with each posture preparing the body for the next one.
The practice begins with the Primary Series, also called "Yoga Chikitsa" or "Yoga Therapy". This series is designed to purify and strengthen the body, especially the digestive system and core muscles. The Primary Series includes standing postures, inversions, twists, and backbends.
Once a practitioner has mastered the Primary Series, they can move on to the Intermediate Series, which includes more advanced postures such as deeper backbends and more complex inversions. This series is designed to clear energy channels in the body and open the chakras.
Finally, there is an Advanced Series, called "Sthira Bhaga," which is reserved for the most advanced practitioners and includes even more complex postures such as contortion postures.
The practice of Ashtanga Yoga also involves the use of a breathing system called "ujjayi," which involves deep, controlled breathing through the nose. This breathing is used to create a steady rhythm throughout the practice and to aid concentration.
Ashtanga Yoga is a demanding and intense practice that can be practiced by individuals of all fitness levels. It is important to find a qualified teacher and to practice with caution to avoid injury. With regular practice, Ashtanga Yoga can help improve strength, flexibility, concentration, and overall health of the body and mind.
