Our material research is about Portland Stone, a type of limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland in Dorset. Suitable for building, this material is found all over the architecture of London, in particular, on civic, religious, and royal buildings.
The Great Fire of London in 1666 fuelled a building boom in the city with a shift towards Portland Stone and away from the timber and lower quality stones used before. This video is an enquiry into the history of the city through tracing the history of the material it was built from. We will examine the first 50 years of processes and events that lead to this time of material change, following the journey of the stone to London – from the quarry to its final destination, within the context of production chains and different players, highlighting the start of a new geology of the built environment in London.
